Jackalberry (also know as African Ebony) has a pinkish-brown colour that darkens with exposure to sunlight. The wood has many small knots and dark streaking providing stunning character, making it ideal for pen making.
Jackalberry wood is a dense, heavy wood that is very hard, making it easy to work with and turn on a lathe.

The Jackalberry - Diospyros mespiliformis - tree can grow to a height of 24 meters, but the average tree grows to a height of 6 meters. The trunks grow straight and high, with the first spreading branches growing far above the ground.
Jackalberry is a hardwood and in the past was used for railway sleepers, wagon wheels and dugout canoes. The wood has a fine texture and a straight to interlocked grain that produces the amazing character of this wood.
