African Mahogany has a deep reddish-brown colour and sometimes has streaks of dark-reddish brown. The wood has a natural lustre and the colour darkens with age resulting in a character that improves over time. African Mahogany is an easy wood to turn.

African Mahogany - Khaya senegalensis - is a deciduous evergreen tree that can grow to a height of 30 metres with a trunk of and up to 1 meter in diameter. African Mahogany grows in Africa along riverine forests and is scattered within the higher-rainfall savannah woodlands.
The wood is used for a variety of purposes, conventionally for carpentry, interior trim, and construction. Historically the wood was used for dugout canoes, household implements and fuel wood.
The grain is straight to interlocked, with a medium to coarse texture and strong natural luster with a light-refracting optical phenomenon known as chatoyancy (cat's eye).
